Short answer

Tile and grout are not waterproof. Every durable tiled shower relies on a membrane behind or beneath the tile that carries water to the drain, and the shower's lifespan is decided by whether that membrane is continuous through every corner, curb, niche and drain connection. Which system is used matters less than whether one complete system was used correctly.

All three work. What does not work is combining a tray from one manufacturer with banding from another and sealant from a third, because none of those products was tested with the others and no warranty covers the assembly.

Pre-slope: the part nobody sees

Water that gets through grout has to reach the drain. In a traditional mortar-bed pan that means a sloped bed beneath the membrane as well as above it, and a drain with weep holes that stay clear. In a panel system the tray arrives pre-sloped. A flat pan under a membrane holds water permanently, which eventually shows up as a smell, efflorescence at the grout, or dampness in the room below.

Where showers actually fail

  • The inside corner where the pan meets the wall, if it was filled with grout instead of a flexible sealant
  • The niche sill, if it was left flat instead of sloped and waterproofed as part of the system
  • The bench top, for the same reason
  • The curb, particularly its inside face and top
  • The drain flange connection, where the membrane must be clamped or bonded per the manufacturer's method
  • Changes of plane with no movement joint, which crack as the building moves seasonally
